Traditional
answer machines store messages on for a single user, todays voicemail
systems store messages on a computer harddisk and will take messages
for any amount of staff.
Each member of staff has their own mailbox, which
only stores their personal messages. Mailboxes are password protected
allowing only the designated member of staff to listen to the messages.
Voice mail systems allow you to create your own personal greeting
so callers receive specific information or instructions from the
person who recorded the message.
Most voicemail systems include an automated attendant,
which means that instead of an operator answering the call the system
will answer. Callers can be directed to the correct department or
member of staff by the system.
Voicemail systems are very advanced, allowing the
unification of voice, fax, and e-mail messages into just one mailbox,
commonly known as “Unified Messaging”.
